The book dragged. There was something odd about the characters- I can't really put my finger on it, but they seemed to have been purchased at a used character sale, and stuffed into a novel together, without any coherent reason. This led to questions like: why, if Mary had fled an alcoholic, abusive husband, is she supposed to fall in love with another, even worse alcoholic? This 'romance' is set up as if it's supposed to be her ideal solution. Why does Mary seem to keep forgetting that she's on the run from her abuser? She's described as only months away from defending her dissertation, and working busily on 'recreating her research' while on the run. And she's only 25! This is the bit where my ability to suspend disbelief started falling apart. Normally, a master's is a couple of years, a Ph.D. 3 or more...and yet, despite being abused, having to have surgery to repair orthopedic damage, and being so incapacitated by the abuse that she can't bear to sleep in a bed, she's somehow whipped through a Ph.D. program ahead of schedule. She's on the run, but she's writing away, planning to go back and defend her dissertation. How on earth can she imagine that she can do this without her husband discovering she's alive? Some scenes go on forever- a painstaking description of washing a horse- and others flash by- she looks at her alcoholic boss and knows for a fact that he would never hit a woman, Then there's just plain odd events, like Mary fleeing her abusive husband and renting an apartment on a street that shares his first name. Really? The author couldn't be bothered to think up a new name? Why is the husband a sadistic sociopath, yet Mary keeps yearning to go back to his loving arms? How does she happen to get a domestic violence volunteer who is a nurse, an Indian, a friend of her deceased father's....and who stages a crime scene with blood evidence to incriminate the husband, after Mary refuses her advice to shoot him? And why is this woman so enraptured with Mary, out of all the victims she counsels, that she's willing to bankroll her escape? Why does she see some evidence on a DVD that instantly drives her to run, but later she waffles back and forth between realizing he's going to kill her, being terrified he'll find her, and being convinced there's some defect in herself that makes her unworthy of his love. I realize that battered wives often go back and forth, but it's as if Mary can't remember her past from time to time. The author states in an afterward that this book was pieced together from a series of stories she wrote over the course of years, and that sees to be the real explanation: the author didn't have a coherent vision for the story, and she's changed her characterizations over time. The author desperately needed to do some research about how Ph.D. programs are sequenced, and how women recover from battering, and she needs to drop the 'just because' illogical coincidences and unlikely characters.

"Butterflies Are Free" was a novel about mental and physical abuse in a bad marriage and how the victim reacted to developing new relationships due to fear and anxiety. This was a good enough novel to want the next volume of the trilogy, but it had it's slow and repetitive parts also. This isn't for everyone, but if you are into relationships, it's a very interesting book.
I had a bit of difficulty getting into this book but once I finally began to enjoy it, I really liked it! Here I am, reading along, getting more and more involved, when I noticed that the percentage of the book was almost gone and nothing had even begun to be resolved! All of a sudden, the book ended! No hint, no warning, no forewarning! Had there been the slightest indication that this would be a "leaving you hanging" kind of book, I would not have started it without having the next volume available to continue the story. I don't have a problem with a book "ending without an ending", but not when the reader has no awareness that it's about to happen. Personally, I felt betrayed by the writer and will be much more careful in the future.
This is the first book in the "Butterfly Series". It lays the ground work for the characters in the series. It is a great way for you to meet the characters and understand their back stories. Again, Nicole Renee Wyatt writes a well-written thought out book. Her writing is impeccable! I read this book two weeks ago as well as the follow up book "Butterflies in the Storm" and cannot get the characters out of my mind....I need to know what happens next!
The story had promise but not the depth it could have had. Thank you to Nicole for teaching me the value of edit, edit, edit and rewrite and then edit again. There are so many mistakes in this story it is sometimes painful. Examples and these are only a few "she scrubbed her skin until it was read"; "she was stood by the table" and my favorite "a safe place to go when she was feeling WEEK" Seriously, pay an editor; you will have a better product. Thank you again for teaching me to polish my book before I ask an agent to even consider it.
The story was awesome and the characters were enjoyable. I was caught up in the interactions of the characters, taking sides, cheering for some and celebrating the defeats of others. I really wanted to give this book five stars and, up until the last paragraph, I would have. I felt like the book ended too abruptly. Maybe there is a part 2. I see this is a series but I am not sure if book 2 picks up where book 1 left off. If it does I will come back and re-review this one. The only thing I found lacking was the ending other than that the book is awesome.
I'm pure cheapskate, so I got this version for free as I do most of my reads. This story has a lot of facets to it that kept me intrigued; the domestic violence situation that the lead character is in is plausible and compelling. Ah, a few misspelled words (as with most indie authors -- such as heals instead of heels, etc.... but sometimes when a story is meant to be told, an author has to just get it out, flaws and all. I only mention it because it's a small peeve o' mine.) But this story had me hooked to where I actually BOUGHT the next book that continues this story!
I live the story it was hard to read that the things she had to go through. I love how Mary had a true friend and even though she try to move on she still have those bad memories of her past. Even though Alan try to close to her she will always step back from him. But I love that he keep on try and try to get close to her .She has a lot of things that she need to let so she can get her life back. I just like on the ending of the book. What happens to them do they get together, what happens to horse, Johe, and what about Alan's wife do they get a divorce, and what about Cliff those he do anything to Mary????????? I hope there is the another book.
